Maximizing a Time-Worn Laundry Room & Powder Room: A Benson Homes Renovation Story

Our client, who had been living in a house that had great bones but was simply dated and time-worn, had big plans to remodel their hall bathroom, laundry room/half-bath, and kitchen/dining room. After meeting several times to discuss their plans and dreams for the remodel, we decided to break the project down into several phases. Phase 1 was the hall bathroom, and it’s still one of our favorite transformations to date!

Next, we tackled their laundry room/powder room to see how we could streamline it from confined quarters to a spacious, practical utility space. We often find that our clients overlook spaces like laundry rooms, since they aren’t “high traffic” areas that guests experience, but the truth is that oftentimes laundry rooms and mud rooms are some of the most used rooms in the house! Our client said that the laundry room/powder room felt depressing, and their main goal was to create better functionality and more usable space. They had seen other Benson Homes projects where the focus was on maximizing storage in every space, and they were inspired to hand the room over to the team so we could work our magic.

Their laundry/powder room is very centrally located, right off the kitchen, and it was important to the client that it felt like an extension of the rest of the house, versus a closed-off room that was hidden away. This meant that it needed the same quality finishes and craftsmanship we were applying to the kitchen, living space, and bathroom. The room was initially partitioned into two cramped spaces, so we first underwent a radical change by removing the dividing wall to open up the space.

We made sure the homeowners could use their washer and dryer throughout the renovation process.

For the next functional upgrade, a front-loading washer and dryer were installed, optimizing space and efficiency. The introduction of a deep, near-black leather-finish granite countertop provided a dedicated area for folding and laundry tasks. The chic countertop finish elevated the look and feel of the laundry room, and is a surprisingly durable material. It turned out to be one of the client’s favorite design choices!

A generous pantry-style storage unit was added to the left of the machines, creating a home for vacuums, brooms, and other essentials. Dark stained walnut cabinets above matched the client’s remodeled kitchen island, tying the spaces together. There was already a half-bath in the room, which the client decided to keep and modernize. A touch-activated faucet brought a contemporary twist to the vanity, while a generously-sized mirror further elevated the space visually. Finally, the client selected charcoal tiles for the new flooring, which complemented their kitchen’s new dark wood flooring. Not only does the tile look amazing, but it’s a very durable choice that will hold up under wear and tear and possible laundry machine mishaps.

This extraordinary renovation not only breathed fresh life into these spaces but also enhanced functionality, proving that a well-planned remodel can transform even the most time-worn areas. Our client's powder room and laundry room are now not only modern but also efficient, reflecting their unique style and needs. Instead of being spaces that are closed off to the rest of the home, the client says they are happy when visitors get to see and use these rooms.
