Deck the Halls: Home Holiday Decorating Tips — Benson Homes

Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays.

And in the year 2020, the song lyrics of that popular jingle have never been more relatable or accurate.

But even though there are fewer parties for hosting, and the hustle and bustle of the typical holiday season has slowed to a simmer, there are still ways to be festive from the comfort of your own home.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your home spruced up while you’re staying in this holiday season.

Trim Greenery from Your Yard

Though the candle industry has tried, nothing quite captures the true essence of the holiday season like fresh greenery. If you have access to pine, or any type of evergreen leaves, clip a few trimmings to add to your holiday floral arrangements. Bonus points for creating homemade garlands or wreaths.

Just be sure to soak any trimmings you use in your home for 12 hours to increase their longevity, and give them a mist with a spray bottle every few days to keep them fresh.

Make Your Own Pot Potpourri on Your Stovetop

Creating your own holiday essence is as easy as bringing a few cups of water to a slow boil on your stovetop. Add in sliced apples, oranges, cinnamon, star anise and even a handful of cranberries; keep on low heat for up to six hours. Your house will smell festive and incredible.

Dust Off the Décor You Haven’t Seen in a While

Many of us have the decorations that take a little bit more effort. We tell ourselves “we’ll get to them,” but each year the swell of the holiday busyness takes over.

This year, make a point to take inventory of what decorations and ornaments mean the most to you. If there are others that you enjoy, but can’t seem to keep up with, consider passing them on to a family member or donating them to a local charity.

Make a Space to Honor Memories from the Past

While you’re home, make yourself a cup of steaming hot chocolate and pull out the old photographs and video clips from days of Christmas past. You’ll enjoy reliving special Christmas memories as you organize and date the material.

Creating photo albums and reels for your loved ones is a spectacular way to feel connected with those who feel further away this year.

Dive into a Traditional Recipe

Have a family recipe that’s time or labor intensive that you don’t quite get around to each season? This may be just the year to explore that.

If you don’t have a recipe that beckons to you with Christmas cheer, try your hands at mastering a new one from your favorite holiday themed baking show.

Who knows? You may stumble upon a new favorite that you and your family can’t get enough of for years to come.
